Balkan five countries tour - 13 days

ALBANIA, NORTHERN MACEDONIA, KOSOVO, BULGARIA AND ROMANIA

Day 1: Tirana airport - Tirana
Arrival at Tirana airport. Meet with  your English speaking throughout tour guide/driver and transfer to your hotel in Tirana. Accomodation and overnight in hotel in Tirana.

Day 2: Tirana - Kruja  - Ohrid Lake 190 km
Breakfast. Transfer to the medieval town of Kruja. We shall be walking through the Ottoman bazaar to reach the fortress from where Albania`s hero George Kastriot Skenderbeg defended the country from the Ottoman invasion where today the National Ethnographic Museum is placed. In Kruja we can also visit a local family that is still producing the Qeleshe (an Albanian traditional wool hat). After the visit of Kruja we return to Tirana in order to get familiar with the city and visit some of the key spots like the Skenderbeg square (Sheshi Skënderbej), Et’hem Bey Mosque, the clock Tower, the castle of the Roman emperor Justinian, the monumental Tomb of Kapllan Pasha, the Tanners' Bridge, the National History Museum and the Bunk’art Museum. In the afternoon we’ll depart to Northern  Macedonia and the jewel of the Balkans, Ohrid lake. Accommodation in hotel, free time  at leisure. Overnight in hotel on Ohrid Lake.

Day 3: Ohrid Lake
Breakfast. In the morning we take a walking tour of Ohrid’s old town, protected by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage. The tour begins from the statue of St Kliment of Ohrid, the patron of the city. Through the cobblestoned narrow streets, we will pass by the Robev Family house built in 1825, today Ohrid’s City Museum that represents the typical Macedonian architecture. Follows a visit of St. Sofia Cathedral, which is one of the most important medieval Churches in the World. Next we will walk through the Ancient Theatre with capacity of more than 5000 people. After, the visit of Holly Mother of God church with the most beautiful fresco masterpiece from 13th Century follows. Then we shall have a little uphill climbing effort with a big reward,  the view from the Tzar Samoil`s fortress.  Just a few steps downhill and a new jewel appears, the Plaoshnik Archeology complex which includes the Early Christian basilica, a Baptisterium from 4th century, all with marvelous and well preserved mosaics. In the middle of the complex St. Clement church is built on the foundations from the 9th century. This is the Ethernal home of the great St. Clement of Ohrid. Exiting Plaosnik we’ll decline a little to reach the magnificent church of St. Kaneo, with the iconic panoramic view of Ohrid Lake.  We recommend lunch break at lakefront restaurant in small Kaneo fisherman Village below. After lunch we shall learn the story about the famous Ohrid Pearls from family that nurtures this secret for generations. In the afternoon we head south to explore the most southern part of Ohrid lake, a place with natural mystery springs of River Drim and the Monastery of St. Naum build by another great philosopher, student of the great brothers St. Cyril and Methodius.  Return to your hotel. Free time for at leisure. Overnight in hotel on Ohrid Lake.

Day 4: Ohrid Lake - Bigorski Monastery - Mavrovo Lake  - Skopje  214 km
Breakfast and departure to Skopje. We take you through the most western path passing through the picturesque canyon of Radika mountain river. On our way we shall stop and visit the most spiritual monastery St. John the Baptist – Bigorski, important for the unique woodcarving art in the church Iconostas – special skilled deep woodcarving technique unique for Macedonia, that’s rarely produced today. Next stop is at National park Mavrovo with beautiful lake Mavrovo. There we’ll make a photo stop at the sunken church and learn little bit more about the park. Arrival in Skopje in the afternoon and start with walking tour of Skopje’s old Bazaar, the second biggest bazaar of its kind, in the world. The tour starts from Mustafa Pasha mosque, the most dominant mosque on Skopje horizon, built in 1492 by Ottomans, the same year Columbus discovered America. Walking through the cobblestone streets with plenty craftsmen shops and restaurants spreading the smells of Kebabs and different spices is truly a unique experience. There is a possibility to sit in one of the local restaurants to enjoy the local food. Then, we slowly come from the bazaar and cross the old stone bridge, the symbol of the city, to get to the central square where the dominant place is taken by the great Fountain of Alexander the Great and many other statues of important people from the Macedonian history. On the central square, before the great earthquake in 1963, stood the birth house of Mother Theresa the woman that changed the world and become a saint. Close to the end of our tour we’ll also visit her memorial house built in recent time, in honor of this worldly renowned and respected from all humanitarian. Accomodation and overnight in hotel in Skopje.

Day 5: Kosovo full day tour 280 km
Breakfast. We depart to full day excursion to Kosovo. Prishtina, the capital, is only 80 km away from Skopje, but first we’ll be visiting Prizren, city with unique soul. Upon arrival, we will have a walking tour of the center of the city - the Shadervan square, we’ll see the Sinan Pasha Mosque and St. Mother of God Ljevish, an UNESCO protected church. If you want to explore more, we can climb up to visit Prizren medieval fortress. We advise having optional  lunch in a traditional restaurant to try the very tasty local cuisine. In the afternoon we shall visit Prishtina. After an hour drive we arrive for a relaxing walking tour of the central area. Enjoy a stroll and coffee on Mother Theresa pedestrian street and learn about life in Pristina. Return to Skopje in the afternoon. Free time at leisure in the evening. Overnight in  hotel in Skopje.

Day 6: Skopje - Rila monastery - Sofia 334 km
Breakfast. Today we head towards Bulgaria. After a four-hour drive with stops and border crossing we’ll reach the famous and UNESCO protected Rila Monastery from the 10th century. This is the largest and the most impressive Bulgarian monastery. Tour of the monastery complex, church and museum with its lavish collection of precious old manuscripts, icons, jewelry, masterpieces of woodcarving, ethnographic exhibition of fabrics and carpets. Free time for lunch in the surrounding restaurants. We kindly suggest to try fresh river trout fish. After lunch we continue our way towards the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia. Upon arrival, sightseeing tour of Sofia a city with 7000 years long history, concentrating numerous cultural and historic monuments from different periods. Visits of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the St. George Rotunda from the 4th century, the St. Sofia Basilica, the ruins of Serdica.  Optional dinner with live music and tradidional folk show in local restaurant. Accommodation and overnight  in hotel in Sofia.

Day 7:  Sofia - Plovdiv - Kazanluk and Rose Valley  - Veliko Tarnovo 346 km
Breakfast. departure to Plovdiv. Upon arrival we  visit the old part of the city with the Ancient Theatre, the beautiful baroque style houses from the 19th century, the Roman forum and many other interesting attractions. Free time for lunch in a local restaurant. Depart towards Kazanluk, the heart of Rose valley worldly known for the production of perfume and essential oils made from roses. Here we will visit the UNESCO protected Thracian Tomb and the Rose Museum. In the afternoon we drive through Shipka pass in order to reach Veliko Tarnovo. Accomodation and overnight in hotel in Veliko Tarnovo.

Day 8:  Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi 12 km
Breakfast.  The sightseeing  of Veliko Tarnovo will include the visits of Tsarevets hill (UNESCO) - an impressive sight with medieval fortifications and dramatic architecture, capital of the first Bulgarian kingdom. We’ll also visit Gurko street and learn about other interesting places in the town. During the tour there is  free time for lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon departure to the museum town of Arbanasi boasting a genuine gallery of art in its Church of Nativity. Return back in hotel in the afternoon and free time at leisure.  Overnight in hotel in  Veliko Tarnovo.

Day 9: Veliko Tarnovo - Bucharest 180 km
Breakfast. Departure to the Romanian capital Bucharest. After a three-and-a-half-hour drive with stops and border crossing we arrive at our hotel in Bucharest for check in and refreshments. Then we shall enjoy a walking tour of Bucharest known for its wide, tree-lined boulevards, glorious Belle Époque buildings and a reputation for the high life (which in the 1900s earned its nickname of "Little Paris").  During the tour there is free time for lunch in local restaurant. We shall also visit the Parliament building which is the second largest government structure in the world, after Pentagon.
Free time at  leisure in the evening. Accomodation and overnight in hotel in Bucharest. 

Day 10: Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Brasov 201 km
Breakfast. Departure to Brasov with stops for visits of Peles Castle, considered by many as one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe, the masterpiece of German new-renaissance architecture. Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873 and completed in 1883, Peles interiors are an opulent display of elegant design and historical artifact. Its 160 rooms are adorned with the finest examples of European art, Murano crystal chandeliers, German stained-glass windows, walls covered with Cordoba leather, Meissen and Sevres porcelains, ebony and ivory sculptures. Next on our agenda is Bran Castle. This fortified medieval castle, often referred to as Dracula's Castle, was built in 1377 to protect nearby Brasov from invaders. Bran is home to a rich collection of Romanian and foreign furniture and art items from 14th to 19th centuries. The castle sits high a top at 200 ft. tall rock overlooking the picturesque village of Bran. On the grounds below there is an open-air ethnographic museum of old village buildings with exhibits of furniture, household objects and costumes. Accomodation and overnight in hotel in Brasov or Poiana Brasov.

Day 11: Brasov  -Sinaia Monastery - Buzau - Tulcea 432 km
Breakfast. Panoramic city tour of Brasov with first visit of Black church, Brasov's famous landmark and Romania's leading gothic church. The Black Church towers over the Council Square, the old town and St. Nicolas church, which like other medieval churches, it is surrounded by protective walls with large wooden gates. The enclosure shelters a small old cemetery where several prominent people of Romania are buried. The First Romanian School, now a museum, the Library and the Archives of Saint Nicholas Church also are found on nearby grounds.  After the tour departure to Tulcea with stop at Sinaia Monastery. Free time for lunch with wine at Buzau, a well-known winery area. Accommodation and overnight in hotel in Tulcea.

Day 12: Tulcea - Danube Delta - Bucharest  291 km
Breakfast. Departure for an enjoyable full day trip into the Danube Delta which is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is the best preserved on the continent. During the tour you can enjoy a typical lunch with fish. In the afternoon, departure to Bucharest. Accommodation  and overnight in hotel in Bucharest.

Day 13: Bucharest - Bucharest airport
Breakfast. Free time at leisure untill it is time for the departure Transfer to airport and farewells with our throughout guide/driver.
